I am fixing up a John Deere R72 riding mower for a lady. I have cleaned the carb, changed oil, and cleaned the air filter. It fires right up BUT it smokes like a chimney! I mean major white smoke coming out of the muffler. Doesn't this mean it is burning oil? Will it need a complete overhaul? The engine is a 1985 Briggs 8 HP. Thanks for the help.

run it for till it gets warm to make sure that oil didn't get in the muffler and you just have to clean it out. If that isn't it you may have a ring or piston problim?

Ok I'll try that today. It may be running rich too so I may try some adjustments.
