In the power equipment world, correct model identification and serial number are important. This is also true for engines and other major components such as hydraulic pumps, motors, hydrostatic drive units, and electric clutches.
Power equipment manufacturers generally don't follow the typical automotive pattern of major changes with model years.
I purchased my Scag Tiger Cub in August of 2008 as a new unit. The B&S engine was manufactured in mid 2007 and the machine serial number indicates the same time frame. This machine serial number group is the latest of the Tiger Cub models. Now that the Tiger Cub has been changed to Tiger Cat, the serial number groups have changed to reflect this change. The machines are very close in actuality except for the ROPS protection being hinged on the Tiger Cat models and ridgid on the Tiger Cubs.
