While many manufactures will void any warranty if you take the guard off your weed-eater, as a lawn care professional, I find it much easier to work with it off. I often use mine as an edger.

By Weed-Eater do you mean trimmer ?

If you do, I'd just take it off if it made it easier.

But then, I do take risks with safety, so if you want to be safe, you probably shouldn't take the guard off!

I prefer my guard off. I use mine as an edger too.

I use mine with the guard off.
It has hit my shoe before and I could barley feel it.
I would not recommend using it bare footed.

I remove the guard to increase the utility of the trimmer. I have gotten to the point where I use my string trimmer as an edger on nearly every lawn I cut. As an edger, the edging is crisper and neater than using a blade edger.

I like them on. If the spool releases too much string the guard usually has a built in trimmer to keep it the perfect length
