Mowed for about 2 hours and then the blades just stopped and the engine cut out as well.

Was able to restart engine and return to the garage but blades would not engage.

The next day, cleaned up all the drives, checked belts and started up the engine rode out to lawn and engaged the blades,
began cutting - about 10 minutes into it blades stopped.

And forgive my ignorance but does a fuse go bad over time -

Fuses corrode, as does the fuse holders.
You should coat them with dielectric grease to prevent this.

Sounds very much like you generator is not working or the regulator/rectifier is not working or the mower has a bad ground.
So start with a voltage reading at the battery terminals. engine off & engine on.
Do another set of tests + on battery to the engine.
If there is a difference, then the ground contacts need to be cleaned.
For those I paint them with liquid electrical tape to prevent corrosion.

Let us know what you find.

Also measure the battery voltage after you turn the mower off, every couple of hours.
If it keeps dropping then either the battery is kaput or the mower has a short.
