I picked up a JD 165 at a yard sale. It's pretty rough but I'd like to get it going. It will crank if I cross the hot lead on the started with the switched lead. It will not crank with the key. I replaced the ignition switch, as there was no key either. I have tried to look at a few wiring diagrams on line but they don't seal to be helpful, mostly too small. Does anyone know where I can find a good diagram that I can print of just expand on my laptop? I've bypassed the clutch switch (it is all rusted out) and tried shorting the seat switch too, still no crank. Any ideas?

Search the forum for John deer manual.
I am fairly sure some one posted a link to a very poorly scanned PDF of the full service manual.
or you can buy one from JD as a download ( cheap ) or in hard copy ( not so cheap ).
According to Manual, (the Spanish gardener ) your mowers cranking circuit goes from the switch to the PTO switch, through that then through a neutral switch on the tranny then to the solenoid.
