I need to replace a B&S 445677 0421 E1 engine. I have located a 4457770231 E1 engine. Would these engines be interchangeable?

You need to check the crankshaft diameter. Those came in 1 inch and 1-1/8 inch. You may have to do some alternator/wiring switches but parts are highly interchangeable.
