the brake pedal will not release on my yardman riding lawn mower.

Check the springs on the brake-rod to the caliper on the trans, and sometimes the caliper gets stuck, this info may OR may NOT apply to YOUR machine since you FAILED to supply us enough info about your machine, see example .......

As Boo has mentioned, there are a lot of different Yard Man tractors.
Jack the rear of the mower up and put it on jack stands so the wheels are free to rotate.
They should turn in opposite directions.
Remove the wheel in front of the brake, don't know which one cause you did not tell us which tractor you got.
The brake will be on the gear box ( on the layshaft ).
It is held on by a small bolt ( or nut ) on either side of the caliper.
clean all of the debris from around the brake , place something underneath to catch the parts then remove the two small fasteners.
DO NOT TOUCH THE LARGE ONE IN THE MIDDLE THAT IS THE ADJUSTER.
As you gave us no information your are now flying blind.
If it has been sitting then the pads can rust onto the disc or the pins can corrode in the caliper.
If you were using it debris can clog it preventing it releasing.
