Don't you love people who think you pay double if there is more than 4 words in the add ?

Now serious business
1) the Kohler is worth that much all by itself if it is reasonable condition
2) the seat is worth near $ 100 all by itself if it has no tears r brittle spots
3) the tyres are worth near $ 400 new so $ 200 if they are still pliable.
4) Deck is worth about that much alone if it is in good condition with no splits, weld or rust holes.

Now it might not work, the tranny could be shot , ut if you are willing to break it down & wait a while you should be able to part is out for 2 to 3 times the asking price.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm really just looking to get a good mower before the grass gets to high. So dependability and durability are my main interests. It looks like a craftsman from a time when they were made better. But I dont know much. I was thinking of offering the guy $400 and working up from there. He says it runs and mows great.

It's a GARDEN tractor, NOT a LAWN tractor..... should have the "beefier" trans, front axle & better metal than a lawn tractor, in my location, it's a reasonable price in GOOD... condition, be sure to see him or yourself to "demo" it, and look carefully at the overall condition, does it appear to be well taken care of..?? does the wiring look original or is there a nightmare job with that, and does he have any manuals or literature to go with it ..?? DON'T be over-anxious... there's more than 1 mower for sale. Good Luck !!

The Craftsman GT6000 of that year has a gear transmission with 3 speed and high low. The transmission is almost bulletproof. What some people do not like is to change gears you must come to a complete stop. They are rated for ground engagement. You can do almost anything with it.

Good point you mentioned there Chuck, A good number of these riding mowers are SUPPOSED to come to a FULL-STOP ... BEFORE changing gears, yes, SOME... you can "stab" the clutch and change gears ( much like a car) but ONLY some, usually advertised as "shift on the go" models, otherwise, a complete STOP IS necessary. It is mentioned in the "toilet-paper" (owners-guide) that comes with the machine, but then, if some-one buys a USED machine and there's NO manual ...... well they MIGHT experience a trans failure sometime down the road. ........

AFAIK all manual mower gear boxes are full constant mesh with sliding internal dogs.
The fastest way to smash the box is to change while the wheels are turning because the instant the key leaves one gear the other will be out of alignment and whenthe key attempt to move it the end will break off.
This then effectively selects 2 gear pairs a the same time on the same shafts.
The end result is 4 broken gears, & 2 broken keys plus a bent shaft or two.

Either the main shaft or the layshaft ( or both ) must be free to to rotate in order to change.
So either the engine is off and you are rooling , or the engine is off & you are stationary or the engine is on and the mower is stationary.

Not a bad price for what you will be getting from the picture?? Look it over close and run it, listen for any odd noises, look for rust or broken brackets, how well it runs. Just beware its a 15 year old mower and parts can be hard to find if needed.
