I own a Murray lawn tractor with a Peerless Tecumseh Transaxle Model #MST-206-502C. I removed it from the chassis in order to change the fluid. It had become hard to shift and the mower was slower than it was a few years ago. I was wondering what type of fluid it uses and how much? I found some information on the net saying that it takes 16 ounces of 80w90 gear oil. Does anyone know anything about this tranny?
I pulled the rubber plug and drained what was in there. It was pretty dark and not much came out. Saw a small leak from the brake seal but it was not that bad.
I keep reading about hydrostatic trannys. I don't think this one is but I could be wrong. Anyone know?

The manual calls for 80W-90. Most of the time I prefer to use Tecumseh Bentinite grease in Peerless trannies when I rebuild them, but if you are not opening up the tranny, stick to the 80W-90.

Thank you everybody for your help. I think I'm going to go with the 80w 90. This lawn tractor has been through hell but it's been a great machine. Some of the parts seem to be hard to find or discontinued.
