I recently picked up a used Hi Vac Snapper (Model P217017BV) with a solid but rusty deck and tired engine. I figured I could clean this one up, repaint it, and replace the engine for less than $600. Now, I'm not so sure, but I'm committed.

I took the mower all apart and sandblasted the parts, now I'm working on assembling my "new" Hi Vac Snapper. My problem is the engine replacement. I've called my local mower repair shop, Jack's Small Engines, and Northern Tool, and they are all telling me that B&S quit making a direct replacement for this engine about 2 years ago, and since it has an odd shaft size, they can't come up with a replacement engine. I can't accept no for an answer, yet.

The B&S engine is a 128602-0149-E1 and has the following shaft size:
Shaft length: 2.98"
Shaft diameter: .984" (or about 24.9mm)

I was really wanting to go with the Honda, but I can't find a match for the shaft size. I've also looked at B&S engines, but again, no luck on shaft size.

From what I've read in some other forums, I may be able to swap out the pulley and blade adapter. Can anyone provide some information on that with the particulars of my setup? I've read other posts about the use of Predator engines, but I'd rather stick with Honda, Kawasaki, Kohler, or B&S.

I've attached a few pics of the project so far. Don't be a hater for wanting a color other than Snapper red! :)

First off, make sure that you measure shaft length to the mounting flange, not just the part protruding from the oil sump. Way back when I was in the business a 21" Snapper had a shaft length of 3 5/32". I've been out of the business since 1995, so I'm not going to be of much help regarding a replacement engine.

Luffydog, thanks for the info. It says on Northern Tools website that this engine has a shaft 25mm x 3 5/32in. That’s just slightly longer than mine. Would that make a difference or would it be ok?

Luffydog, I just ordered it! I don’t know why no one else could look up this info and you found it pretty easily. I figure if it doesn’t work, I’ll just have to return it. Nothing else looks even close on the shaft size so I’ll we’ll see!
