Ive recently bought a second hand MTD 38" tractor , and currently have body off while replacing a chewed out drive bearing..
The gear shift lever has always felt a bit sloppy, so i thought would investigate further.
Have uploaded a vid of it being moved around to cybersol.com.au/uploads/gear.mp4
Pardon for links having to be cut and pasted to work, I apparently have not posted enough times to include live urls yet.. :(

I realize the shaft is not being guided by the cover gearchange slot so is now extra sloppy... but even when guided it feels sloppy..
Should it be this way?
looked at the parts diagram at ereplacementparts.com/images/mtd/13AC762F000_WW_3.gif
and can see an item 22 is a spring that is put near the shaft... there is a hole in the chassis also near the shaft, would this spring possibly be used to keep the mechanism " snugger"?
Any advice gratefully taken
cheers
