Looking at an Exmark walk behind with a Kawasaki engine. The guy said he left it at idle to go dump the bag. He said he heard the engine run away and then it sputtered and died and would not restart. I haven't done anything other than pull the cord to feel the compression and it felt really strong. Any ideas what I might be getting into?

Governor gear maybe?

did you look at the condition of the engine oil? How much fuel was still in the tank?

I did not check either of those. I know this guy, he is a professional landscaper and has high end equipment. He is meticulous about his equipment and had it serviced regularly.

He said there was no smoke when it revved up and died.

well it could be the governor, take into consideration what it might cost to replace the engine or to repair it and make an offer.........maybe something quick and easy, or not......it's all about chance at this point

It ran wild rpm's just before it shut down, that's the issue of concern.

Check the governor and linkages/rods that may have come off.

my toro did that when it ran out of fuel, was hard to prime the fuel pump but at least after five or time minutes it started up again
