I have a 612 Grasshopper with the 12.5 hp Briggs & Stratton Vanguard on it. The starter has gone out and I can't seem to get any of my metric or standard sockets with a snap on nuckle onto the nut to remove it. After looking it up on google it says to use a 13MM socket which I have tried with a 3/8 and 1/4" drive and still can't seem to even get on to the bolt right with either one. Any suggestions?

The standard briggs tool is a 13mm universal socket with 1/4 in drive. Still a pain to get on sometimes. Some of the bolts have a torks in the center and those work better for removal sometimes. Make sure to get the flats of the starter drive turned correctly to get the wrench in there. Even with the correct tools they are a pain to get to and then get removed.

I have been able to get a 1/4 inch drive socket behind the starter drive on some engines, and then use a long extension to break them loose and remove the bolts.
