Bought a cub cadet 1641 series lawn tracter 4 $285.00. Sounds like a deal eh? wrong! I've got over $300.00 invested in making it run ok. (granted over $125.00 was spent on preventative maintenance & $85.00 was due to my fault-I broke the hour meter while trying to figure out why the solenoid wouldn't engage). but it still needed a drive belt for the mower deck, a solenoid & a new ignition switch. Hopefully it'll run just fine after I get done with it.

You own over a 20 year old MTD for 600+ dollars. Not a bad price for what used rides go for here in NY.

Getting very hard to find parts for them old mowers and when you do find parts its big $'s. I needed a mower deck spindle for a old Cub Cadet last year and when I found one it was 200 dollars. The OP is going to find this out with his 20 year old Cub if he works it hard.
