15.5 hp briggs charge issue

i swapped a 15.5 ohv to my old john deere i rewired it all but it will not charge when i first started it up under the flywheel started smoking so i shut it off. i think i had it wired wrong well i wired it right the other day and it did the same thing not sure if i blew something or if the diode is bad now. i still use the mower as it works without the charge system hooked up but id like to put a battery in it instead of boosting it. anyone know if a bad diode would fix this or how to go about diagnosing whats wrong with the charge system ?

Sounds like a shorted stator. Need to pull the flywheel off and see if it looks like a crispy critter.
