Hustler Sport won't start

I have a Hustler Sport and have been very happy with it until this season. I had to replace the engine and in the process failed to get the deck clutch positioned properly. This allowed the clutch to spin about 3/4 a turn when I engaged the blades. This resulted in the wires going to the clutch becoming disconnected. I reconnected the wires and now it won't start. I jumped the wires across and the starter will spin so I know the battery is up good but it won't fire. Also without it running, when the switch is on and I pull up the knob to engage the deck clutch, I think I should be able to hear the switch click and it isn't. I suspect there is a safety somewhere that is disconnected or faulty but I'm not sure how to start troubleshooting this issue.
