i just purchased a mower with b & s 4.59 engine.
it has a primer,
it is very difficult to start if it hasn;t been run for a few hours.
i called b & s but only got general answers.
it appears to me that the primer is not working as i can;t fell the pressure when pumping.
i don't want to return it unless i have no other alternative.
(gas is fresh. starts great when warm without priming.)

If it's a brand new mower, DON'T void your warranty by messing with it, YES it's a PITA but make the seller fix it !

:welcome:

I agree about not voiding any warranties this early on.

I'm going to move this thread over to our Craftsman section (hopefully, I have it right and that's the mower you are talking about).

i tried starting it again today pumping the primer about 12 times.
This time it started first time.
I'm hoping that the primer will eventually work with fewer pumps.
Any thoughts?

I suspect the primer bulb may be cracked or otherwise damaged. They're very inexpensive and easy to replace.

As others suggest, you can probably get it fixed under warranty if you don't want to mess with it yourself.

Read your manual. My Blower wants 8 pumps before a start. Your mower may require as many.

Sounds like it's sucking air from somewhere. Could be the primer button not seated right. Or maybe a carb seal not sealed good.
