My Simplicity 5116 lost its tranny. I have found one on Craigslist for a good price. What can I look at to tell what shape it is in? It has already been removed from the mower (JD 160). The reason it was removed is that the mower it was in had a motor that simply had worn out, thus the tractor is being parted.
Also what should I do service wise prior to placing the tranny into the mower? From what I see these are pretty much sealed units. There is no leaking visible on the used one I will be getting.
On a side note I am aware that the JD 160 used a longer axle than the Simplicity so I will need to make a spacer to correct for this. The extra inch or two of width does not bother me much as it is still narrower than the deck.
There are no usable parts from the old transmission, when it went it put a gaping hole in the case and cracked multiple gears.
