I have a Craftsman LT1000 riding mower with a 17.5 HP Craftsman engine. It has started leaking oil from the engine onto the top of the pulley so I suspected the crankshaft oil seal. I pulled the engine and removed the seal and found a hole. This isn't normal, right?

Pulled the seal ?
Looks like you have ripped the rubber out of the seal and we are looking at what is left of the steel case.
And if I am right, then the seal was installed backwards as they go in rubber down, metal up

Thank you for the reply. The seal was installed correctly and I was able to remove all of it. I bought the mower 15 years ago and this was the original seal. The hole is in the metal where the crankshaft exits.

If that is a hole in the casting then yes it has to be there.
Oil has to get into the top bearing and oil has to be able to get out
SO there is 2 holes.
Looks a bit bigger that I would have expected but been a long time since I got that deep into an intek.
