Was mowing the other day and it stoped. Right now it runs but if I try to get it to move the belt will tighten up but will start squealing and smoke from the front. It's a Troybilt pony 17.5 hp 42" cut. Thanks in advance

You will need to get down and look up inside the frame and inspect the belts to make sure the rear belt hasn't come off the pulley and is jammed under the tranny pulley, or you have a seized idler pulley, and make sure the parking brake hasn't stuck in the on position. May be better to remove the deck to inspect the belts, Most likely you will need to replace them now after burning a spot on the front belt.

Always use OEM belts on MTD products, and replace both belt at the same time to remain sync in the drive system.

Thanks for the response, and forgive my ignorance on the subject but which one is the idler pulley and how can I tell if the brake is stuck.

If you can push the mower without it running and it rolls then the brake is fine. there is an idler pulley back at the transmission and depending on setup could be two idler pulleys under the center of the mower. May need to remove deck to inspect properly. Also make sure the big pulley on top of the tranny turns, as well as the variable pulley, that is the thing with the moveable center back by the tranny the both belts go to.

It will roll still in neutral while off. Here is a pic of what it looks like there is another pulley on top of the trannyIMG_0136.jpg

the drive belt is showing signs of cracking so you will be needing to replace the belts in the future if not now. The parking brake lever is located on the right side of the transmission in front of the axle. It looks like a 1-1/4 wide piece of metal sticking up or down about 2 inches. Move that piece front to back to see if it moves freely, Most will click into the off position when moved by hand when stuck. Some will stick due to rust in the two pins behind that flat piece of metal. On others the return spring will break preventing it from falling back to the off position.

The actually transmission pulley is located under the battery, the pulley in your picture is the variable speed pulley. .
