Loud Popping Noise

I can't remember exactly what type of Honda mower I have, but yesterday it decided to act up and quit working. When I first initially started mowing, the self propel decided to stop working. No biggie, I can push. Then about 5-8 minutes later a loud popping sound happened and then the mower turned off. There was a slight oil smell, but I did not notice any kind of leaking anywhere. I tried restarting, it just wouldn't turn over. Any suggestions?

Did you check the oil level in the engine?

I did. It was normal.
