It will always shut down if the blade is not going and the brake is locked. I have checked all of the switches, I think, and all seem okay. I heard that there might be a nylon gear somewhere that is worn, but I can't seem to find one. Any help would be appreciated.

I am assuming that what you are trying to say is your mower starts then shuts down when you get off the seat even if the brake is set .
Is that about right ?
If so your seat switch is faulty or there is a bad connection between the sea t switch & the brake switch

That is right that it shuts down when I get off the seat. I have pulled the seat connector apart and connected a jumper on the connector and it still shuts down. I don't think the seat connector is the problem.
