Hello friends!

Quick simple question (i think) concerning my Kohler Courage Pro 25hp and the specs are:

Family: 8KHXS.7252GB
Spec # PS-SV730-0028
Build date 1-25-2008

I was wondering if i can use a 5w-30 weight instead of the required SEA-30 oil that is recommended? I have a gallon of it (5w30) on hand and would like to use that if possible?

Thanks for time and any replies, it's appreciated!

Here in Philly Yo.

Buy the 30wt. I know oil is expensive but using the manufacturer recommended oil can save you some trouble in the long run.

Find another use for your 5W30 and keep using the SAE 30. It only use's 2 quarts of oil

5W30 not recommended for operation above 40 degrees per Kohler.

I wouldn't change oil viscosity based on anyone's opinion except Kohler.
If your 5W-30 is synthetic you should be fine, but I'd still contact Kohler.

I just rechecked the Kohler service manual, and the only recommended oils for your engine are 5w30 below 32 degrees, I was thinking 40, 30w above 50 degrees, and 10w30 for the full temperature range.

Kohler doesn't make allowances if it is synthetic or not as far as operation temperature range.

IT is a lawn mower, not the space shuttle.
The 5W 30 will be fine.
If you have got it, use it.
Just remember it is a 5 weight oil, with stuff shoved in it to make it like a 30 weight oil at 100 deg C.
So when it breaks down it ends up being 5 weight which is way too thin.
So use the 5W 30 till you run out.
Change it at the end of every season regardless of the hours as well as at the required hours 9 if longer for any one season ).

How long the oil has been in an engine and how much is in the engine is a lot more important than the actual grade of oil.
Check it EVERY TIME beore you start the engine as 5wt will tend to leak out a fair bit.
