I recently acquired a John Deere 105 with the Briggs and Stratton engine. The mower would run, but surge up and down, so I started looking for the problem. I'm 90% certain that it is fuel related and some kind of carb problem. This engine has the Nikki carb, which is a metal shell with completely plastic guts. According to what I can find, it's prone to issues if it gets at all dirty inside. Does anyone on here have any experience with these? I've ordered a rebuild kit for it, but maybe I'd be better off to just replace it. I've also heard that bad valve guides on these Intek engines can lead to the surging problem. What do you think folks? I'm here in Florida and it's time to get busy mowing!
