  • / Can't move yard machine tractor if the engine is not running
Hello everyone, from Wisconsin.
I just purchased a used Yard Machine by MTD 7 speed shift on the go tractor (Riding lawn mower).
I'm still trying to figure out what model it is. (More on that later.)

Anyhow, everything seems to work just fine, except the following and I'd really appreciate some advice.

When the engine is off.
I am unable to move the machine, manually, forward or backward.
When the engine is running everything works fine.
I have it in neutral.
The parking brake is off
And I have stepped on the clutch.
Nothing.
It's like the transmission is engaged.

What I'm worried about is, if the engine stops running and I need to get the machine in my trailer so I can take it in for service.

What am I doing incorrectly ?

Replies would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

On my Craftsman, there is a ring by the trailer hitch that needs to be pulled out to disengage the trany. Maybe yours has something similar.

Thanks for the reply.
I just ran out and looked, and it doesn't have anything like that.
I know what you mean though cuz I used to have a Craftsman LT1000 and that's exactly what I needed to do before I could move it manually.

As always, the model # would probably be a big help.
If you do not have the owners manual, look on lone for it.
Shouldn't be too hard to find, IF you have the model #.

First, thanks for the reply.

I bought it used and I am unable to find an MTD sticker that displays the model and serial number.

I'm learning things about this Lawn machine almost hourly.
I THINK, the model number is: 13AN772G729 (I didn't have this, until just a very short while ago. It came from a nice person on this forum.)

Here's a link to an MTD page for what certainly looks like my machine.

If that is your model #, or your tractor is pretty much the same, you have MTD's variable speed transmission
which I refer to as the "Flying Saucer"(for the double tapered floating pulley in the middle of the drive system) variable
speed system rather than a hydraulic drive system. That being said, there is no release lever to be pulled.

All I see is that the parking brake is engaged when the speed selector is set at the #1 position and the clutch pedal released.

If your tractor cannot be pushed when the speed selector is not in the #1 position and the F-N-R lever in the N position, something is out of whack............
I would try to find a spot with the FNR lever that is clearly neutral. That may need a bit of adjustment.
Depressing the clutch pedal engages the brake, so leave it released and speed selector in #2 or higher setting.

Other than that, I am lost.........
