This is a spare engine I picked up for free from a buddy to use on my zero turn when and if my current Briggs intek goes out. Noticed this weekend when pulling it from the doner machine that the output shaft looks deformed on the key way slot and the key looks deformed and maybe broken off the factory pulley?. I'm not sure but aren't these keys molded into the pulleys which would mean this one broke off? Can I still use this engine on my machine if needed or is it a parts engine now? My zero turn has electric pto if that matters.

The above engine (the proposed replacement) is a 18.5hp intek twin model 407777 and my current installed engine is an 18hp intek vtwin 405777.

407777 1" Diameter x 3-5/32" Length
Drilled & Tapped 7/16"-20 - Full 1/4" Keyway
405577 1" Diameter 3-5/32"
Drilled & Tapped 7/16-20, Keyway

They are a match so you have a direct replacement.

Keyways and something you buy and insert into the grove then add your accessory. It is used to allow engine to turn the accessory.

So that deformed area on the shaft won't hurt anything?

The way to check that is to buy a new key and put it in and twist towards the deformed area. If it comes out easily then it will cause problems. The picture you gave us does not really show the extent of the damage.

Also Blaz ... isn't that where the " stack-pulley ' or " PTO " rides or ...and it is locked on by a bolt ..??

Key is what the stacked pulley or PTO uses to spin. Should have bolt to hold either on.

I've never had occassion to remove a stack-pulley ...YET !! But if it's like removing the pulley off my transaxle ...
THAT was a 2 day fiasco ...had to go careful because I was beginning to deform the pulley .

There was a bolt holding it on. I don't think i am gonna try it till the current engine goes but if nothing else it's a good parts machine....
