So you've got a mower that must be tipped over to drain the oil?

A scrap bit of lumber will help increase the distance between the tip of the filler/drain neck and your catchpan, for no-drama draining..

Wish I could, but the filter is placed horizontally = oil mess if pre soaked.

I do, but I only fill filter once & let it soak in, then quickly screw it on to horizontal mount. But I have lots of practice, my Harleys have horiz oil filters too.
