I got my John Deere d105 about three years ago, I've had no issue except it will backfire after I shut off the mower. I shut off the mower at around 1/3 throttle. I've tried the lowest setting, and 1/2 throttle and it usually always backfires. I know it usually isn't bad for the mower, but it can get really annoying sometimes. Any tips? I believe my fuel solenoid is fine as well.
It's a 17.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine.

Check the after fire solenoid on the carburetor for correct operation. There is at least a couple of ways to do that. 1) With the engine dead, listen and feel of the solenoid when the key is turned on and off. 2) With the engine running stop electric power to the solenoid by either un-plugging the wire from solenoid or disconnecting the negative battery cable. If the solenoid is operating this will kill the fuel supply and the engine will stop.

A third way to possibly eliminate the backfire is to allow the engine to lo idle for 2-3 minutes.
