Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

had to replace the mixing valve on the washing machine, only 14 months old and 2 months out of parts warranty. Did not want to pay the service fee quoted 125.00 to come out plus parts, so I got it off the internet and replaced it my self....

I sure do miss the days when things would last 20 plus years before something broke or just wore out.......sigh

Doc,

When I first joined my father's electrical business we also sold and serviced appliances. (Sold Westinghouse, Serviced most anything.) Do you have nasty water? The hose connections look like they might have a rusty stain in them. We have iron in our water here and I had to replace the old original iron filter. (Water company quoted us $3,400!!) I ordered a Catalox filter from the "Clean Water Store" out in CA for $500 and did the installation myself. It has worked flawlessly ever since.

Anyway did the mixing valve die electrically or just plug up?

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

Don't know about making them, but one wonders how they train them.
Even worse is Speedy Sleeves were invented down here ( naturally we did not commercialise this invention ) so one would wonder why they were not conversant with them.
They quoted $ 295 for a new spider just after telling me my washing machine was obsolete as it s belt drive & the new ones were direct drive and way pasts its design life.
I know the washing machine is obsolete as I bought it from a superseded stock shop in 1999 ( I am frugal ).
I did mention that my mother only ever had 1 washing machine in 57 years and that one ( a Tray Way ) was still in good working order when she died

Bert-man - Et al,

You guys are right, older white goods were truly built to last. I remember disassembling a Norge once that was built like a military tank. I have always been a loyal believer in front loading washers - Westinghouse invented the Laundromat - as most use 1/3 the water and 1/3 the detergent of a top loader, which is important if you are on a well and a septic system. And they do a far better job of actually washing the clothes. The new front loaders that use direct drive DC motors finally over-came a number of problems the original front loaders faced. Namely a complicated drive system and balance issues when spinning. The old Westinghouse front loaders had an elliptical pulley drive (think about THAT for a few moments) and to maintain stability when in the spin mode, had heavy cast iron weights surrounding the tub, which became cement later on and made the machines weigh over 300 pounds.

Fixing most of the problems appliances have isn't rocket science, but the newer ones are all 'computer' controlled, making doping out control issues difficult and costly.

Bert - In defense of today's (and yesterday's!!) service persons, I have never heard of or used a 'Speedi-Sleeve'. If they were factory trained, then they would have been trained to replace worn out parts with OEM parts, not to think outside the box like a bunch of old lawnmower repairmen (and women). I remember one old Westinghouse laundromat that a customer had who refused to replace the machine even after parts were no longer available for it. I had several short stainless steel screws with "O"-rings and waterproof cement screwed into tiny holes that had rusted through the sump to keep the damn thing from leaking. She - like Bert, was a frugal old bird... Nothing wrong with that! However, maintaining old things that are no longer supported with spare parts is what makes service persons flexible and adaptive, not factory training.. The knowledge you are referring to, like much else, comes with age and experience..

two of the solenoids failed, did not click......would have just replaced them but they were sealed in the plastic from the factory.........I now about the water, we are installing a water filtration system this winter, one of the 10 big things on my todo list.

So it looks like someone hacked my amazon account, so now I need to spend some time at the bank getting that fixed.......it's pretty sad that the bank software could not stop the same $62.25 charge to my account 18 times in one day!!!!!! I check my account online every morning, and that is what I saw just moments ago.........

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

Well gang, hopefully this Black Friday I'll have a new puter to replace my ol faithful 10 year old ( VISTA ) dinosaur, NOW I'll have to learn Win 10, Schitt, I was just gettin warmed-up on Vista, ( LOL ) Wifey up-graded from 7 to 10 on hers, awhile back, (free) but it sucks, to much B/S in the way and file handling is a PITA, it's probably just us, but we have our pictures, and some other things in several different places, we're used to going to the "pictures" folder (and others) and everything is in one place, and you could create your own separate folders and move things to where you wanted, I know there are work-arounds but re-learning schitt is so time consuming, I think they should have stayed with Win 7 and kept improving THAT platform, Maybe I'll do a Recovery on this dinosaur, then remove all the programs and garbage that came with it and just keep it off the net and use it to manipulate all my flash-drive files and store things, we shall see !

NEW PUTER.JPG ... HOPEFULLY !!

I think I would consider a new bank, Not saying I'm immune to hacking, but my bank sends me an instant alert to ask for approval, if I try to do 2 withdrawals one after another, PITA at times, but worth it to me.
