diff size engine with hydrostatic transmission

can i put a diff engine on my mower with a hydro static transmission? the old one is what i believe was a 16 horse. the carrier rod broke. there is no id tag on the mower.

Post your Simplicity 7 digit model number, example: 1692182. or engine numbers. example: B&S engine, model xxxxxx, type xxxx, trim xx.

sticker or tag should be on right or left side chassis rail below backside of engine.

It's really not the hp that would be a problem.
You will be fine as long as you run around the same RPMs.

Manual transmissions are not input speed sensitive like hydros are, however unless you fit the same box as was offered as an alternative when new.
The whole set up is different so there will be a lot of buggerising around to get the controls to work unless you fit the gear from an old dead simplicity.
You will need to hook up a gearchange and then some sort of gate to ensure the box stays in gear as the detents built into most boxes are not strong enough to hold them in gear and changing on the fly will break gears and selector keys.

It is possible but unless you have a donor it can be a lot of work.
