Purchased a HRB215K3HXA from a woman who was moving to a place with no yard. Appears to be in good shape. Included the mulching blades and plug. Serial # 6350702, Engine # GJAB-7446150.

Fixed the ratcheting pawl system in the rear wheel (Detroit Locker style!). Checked compression on the engine: 80 psi (three pulls - wide open throttle), 120 psi (w/exhaust valve in-operative - no compression release). Inside of head ( under the valve cover) was very clean. Nice film of clean oil. Runs good under load.

Issue is: Spark Plug looks dark on the porcelain, get some black exhaust smoke on power up and sometimes smells like it is burning oil. Also wants to hunt for RPM at idle (like a lean surge).

With compression like that (80/120): I am thinking the carb is suspect. To rich at 3300 RPM and too lean at 2100 RPM. Gas washing the cylinder of oil making smoke and smell.

I like this thing as it mows the lawn great. Any ideas? Replacement carb is easy (and cheap). Valve guides look to be alot of work.
