I need to replace the" lift bracket index" .The part # is 703-2239 and there
are 2 of them. This part is what holds the deck height handle in place.
Example; It has notches so you can adjust the height you want to mow the grass.
Has anyone replaced this part and if so can you advise me how to do it or where
I can get information on how to replace it.

You are in for a fun time.
You will have to remove the entire lift arm after first removing the rear wheel and it that has not been removed & greased occasionally that will be "interesting"
After it is off the deck lifter spring has to come off, make yourself a spring tool out of some heavy wire.
While you have the arm off have a good look at it near the pivot they are very prone to cracking in that region.
All of the ones I service (around a dozen now days ) have been braced in this area.
The welds break free then there is no 2 directional bracing.
Not really design fault considering they were an entry level commercial machine and are 20 years old.

MTD has discontinued support for these machines so unless there are aftermarket parts being made, what is out there already is all there is.

Agree, the mechanical bits of are strong enough and durable enough to finally wear out something after twenty years of hard use. Only the JD comes to mind as being more durable. Having said that, the 2000-series wiring and switches are a purchasing quality failure. They've been responsible for many otherwise sound machines being junked.

Thanks for the tip on checking the lift pivot. FWIW, my 2166 was used to pull a salt spreader and thus had a virgin PTO and lift mechanism; played hell with the sheet metal, though.
