series 760-770 won't start

I have a MTD that on the manual just says series 760-770. This was given to me, so I don't know a lot about it. I have tried starting it, new battery, new solenoid and fresh gas. When I go to start it, there is just a clicking sound coming from the area of the solenoid, under the seat, left corner. It was doing that, so I thought that maybe the new solenoid was bad or I had hooked it up wrong and shorted it out or something, so I replaced it and still just get a clicking noise. Any ideas as to what to try next to get this thing going?

Check your grounds, both battery cable to chassis and solenoid to chassis. If you have a three post solenoid, the solenoid case is the ground and you must make sure that it is mounted tight to a clean surface.

We really need the engine make and numbers.
In the mean time pull out the spark plug(s) and try to rotate the engine by hand.
