Was at my step mom's yesterday, she has a John Deere 160 lawn tractor THAT STILL HAD THE OEM FUEL LINES !!!! They were at least 20 years old, maybe more, and as hard as metal. I replaced them and also the fuel filter, and while working on her tractor I got to wondering how the fuel pumps on these machines work.

Does anyone know, are they electrical type or vacuum operated? Thanks for your advice.

depending on engine the are operated by either vacuum or by mechanical movement of a diaphragm and fuel flow is controlled by an inlet and outlet valve

Bigger John Deeres usually use an electric fuel pump. My buddy has a Kawi in his 425, and his dad has an 18 hp Onan in his 318, and they both use electric fuel pumps. He had to change them both.

Older Onans use a vaccum-powered pump. I'm not sure about Kohler.

B&S twins on other mowers use a vaccum pump (I've had to change a few of THOSE).

On a JD that little, I'd guess a vaccum pump.
