Hello,

I have an older B & S mower. To start it, I have to take off the air cleaner cover and stick a screwdriver in the choke. It will then run fine. Warm starts are easier, but not great, and sometimes I still have to screwdriver the choke.

It seems it should be an easy fix, but I can't figure it out.

Are you sticking the screw driver in the choke to keep it open or closed?
This is probably the choke o matic setup i believe it's called.
Theres a diaphragm in the carb that closes the choke when the engine is cold then opens it when the engine starts ( this might be your problem) i would just do a carb overhaul and replace all the gaskets and give it a good cleaning.

If your locking the choke closed then the engine is running lean I would still do the carb over haul and re adjust everything to the proper settings.

Hope this helps ya out!
