Briggs engine model 285707

It's a 12.5 (i think) HP, L head engine. My first teardown and rebuild... do the oil seals (one on blade side, and one on flywheel side) go all the way to the bottom, or do they sit flush with the engine housing at the top?

Here is a picture of each seal sitting flush with the engine, and hopefully you can see how much room is left underneath it.

I make then flush with the housing for the most part. It really doesn't matter if you got room to set the seal a little lower if need a different sealing surface on the crankshaft. I have seen it where a seal will wear a grove into the crankshaft.

I always set the seals about 1/16" below the flange edge. Do not set it much lower than that, as the area is behind is a oil galley area. I have also seen seals installed improperly cut the crank.

Thanks, that guys videos are awesome... my engine happened to be the exact same as one he tore down and rebuilt on camera, so i have been heavily using it for a reference.
