Hey guys,

New to the forum. Picked up a used TB tuff cut 230, model number 12AS5690063.

Hoping someone knows about this smart touch push button start.
Here is the story, bought this today on Craigslist. I went to look a it and the owner started it instantly with the push of the button. Got it home and cannot start. Brought it home in my SUV and had the bar with the push button against the ceiling(fully engaged). Could this have messed anything up?

Has gas, oil, clean air filter, spark plug wire is connected. Not sure how the orange key thing works either. Turned that completely and tried pull starting and still nothing. I downloaded the manual and followed the starting procedures for both cold and hot start and still nothing.

Anybody have any insight? Please help!!

OK so it is not the electric start, just the one where you have to push a button then pull start it?

The stuff I am giving you now are the big points to follow in starting.

BladeControlHandle
The blade control handle is located on the upper handle
of the mower. The blade control handle must be
depressed in order to operate the unit. Release the
blade control handle to stop the engine and the blade

SmartTouchTM Starter
The Smart Touch TM Starter button is located on the
upper left side of the upper handle. This button must be
depressed fully while pulling the blade control handle
toward upper handle for the engine to start. The starter
button wilt automatically return to the off!up position
once the blade control handle is released.
NOTE: The starter button must be depressed to start
the engine either with the Smart Touch TM starter or
recoil starter system.

SafetyKey
The safety key, located on the engine, is used to
activate/deactivate the Smart Touch starter system.
This key must be in the run position to start the mower
for both the Smart Touch starter and the recoil starter.
See your engine manual for more information.

Yes, I have read those instructions and have followed all of them.
I just went out to try it again and this is what I did:
Checked gas:full
Oil:good
Plug: needs new(but started instantly yesterday)
Made sure key was in run position
Primed 3x
Pushed and held start button while pulling down on blade control handle.
This is when it instantly fired up yesterday.
Did nothing today.
Next I tried pull starting as it says in manual, still nothing.

Perhaps the mechanism that allows the engine to start when depressing the blade control handle got disengaged when I brought it home. As I said in first post, the bar was engaged against the ceiling for the ride home.

I am at a loss on this one. The owners
said that it has always started and I was there to witness it. Maybe I got screwed on the deal but I don't feel that way I will prob take it to a TB service shop unless anyone else has some ideas. This is frustrating!!

If this is the model which has a little orange lever to the right of the blade stop bar and a orange/yellow lever on the right top of the engine then do as below.

Make sure the orange/yellow key on the top of the engine is moved towards the front of the engine (clockwise) for the starter to be able to function.
If this is the model which has a little orange lever to the right of the blade stop bar then simply push and hold the orange button forward, then while still holding the lever pull the blade stop bar back as you would on any push mower.
It should engage the electric starter for a second or two and startup.

Be sure to press the primer bulb 4 or 5 times before trying to start or you will exhaust the starter momentum.
If this happens then you either have to put the safety key in the back position
