14hp Briggs Opposing Twin Question

The engine starts up every time ok but we have to feather the choke ~50% on to keep it running.

We have cleaned the air filter & changed the plugs. Gas is fresh....trying to eliminate easy issues.

I played around with the needle screw (not sure of the correct name for it)... located in the front of this carb --> choke was still required to keep the motor running.

I am thinking the carb float level? Maybe a clogged port somewhere in the carb? Where should we start?

It sounds like a fuel flow issue... Either a problem at the tank, in the fuel line or at the carburetor... If it has a fuel bowel at the float there may be water in it ... remove and clean is a good starting point, that will also let you see that you have good fuel flow to that location... :smile:KennyV

If the fuel thing doesn稚 cure your problem you may want to check for a vacuum leak around the carburetor or a hose leading to the intake or carburetor. This can be easiest accomplished by spraying carburetor cleaner around the base of the carburetor being careful not to get any into the air inlet of the air cleaner. If you have a vacuum leak the engine should speed up when spraying the carb cleaner. You should even be able to determine approximately the general area of the leak.

One thing to keep in mind is that the fuel today has a shorter shelf life and it can creat problems. It sounds like you may need to clean the entire carb. They do get junked up when sitting for any period. But before doing so do what the others have suggested.
