Have traced the problem to either the regulator rectifier or the stator. When the three wire harness is disconnected the fuse doesn't blow.Does any one know how to test either of these two items?

To test the stator.........
With engine stopped, measure the resistance across stator leads using an ohmmeter.
If resistance is 0.1/0.2 ohms, the stator is OK. If the resistance is infinity ohms, stator is open. Replace stator.
With the engine stopped, measure the resistance from each stator lead to ground using an ohmmeter.
If the resistance is infinity ohms (no continuity), the stator is OK (not shorted to ground).
If resistance (or continuity) is measured, the stator is shorted to ground. Replace stator.

Please note I'll be away from the forum after today until the spring so will not be able to answer your questions, but am sure other members here will be able to, good luck.
