What are the advantages of one versus the other? Which would be best for leaf pickup? Is it possible to insert a plastic bag into the solid bin and have it bag as one collects?

Most baggers need a lot of air movement to work properly, so I doubt that putting a bag into a solid catcher would work very well. From my experience both types of systems work well. Most problems occur when the user does not do one of the following.
1. Has the wrong blade, yes you need the right style of blade.
2. Not cleaning the underside of the deck, a clean deck means better air movement.
3. Keeping the blade sharp, believe me it makes a difference.
4. Cutting grass that is wet or too long.
5. Not having the unit operating at the proper speed.

Hope this helps.

IMO, the fabric is rugged, perhaps, overall better than a vented solid material.
The problem I have is this..
Here, it rains nearly every day, the grass is generally too wet and too long..
I spend more time cleaning the mower undersides and emptying bags than I do actual mowing..
The LB undersides catches and traps too much wetness and mud..
I think that an all-new deck design, obstacle free, with a replaceable Teflon coated plastic liner is the answer.
By all-new I mean, 90% new, only the engine could stay the same..
