I have an old Montyward signature 2000,tmo-3395309 18hp,42 inch deck.I installed new front drive belt from engine to variable speed pulley,but inbetween was an idler pulley.How is that pulley used?

I have a broken trans oil dipstick.I need a measurement from cap end to full and add oil mark.It must be betwen ser#821060&880000.
