Never a bad practice to follow the Owner's Manual. For my walk behind it says: SAE 30 or SAE 10W-30, API SJ or higher.

Update, this continues to be a VERY nice machine. Continues to provide 100% reliability and GREAT low gas consumption. Still zero hesitation w/ my recommendation on this machine.

The Lawn Boy 7268 is a 1980 model. There is a governor controlling the throttle plate, and an air filter (that must be clean), that will all affect the rpm.

Welcome to the forum. My 21" Snapper has been a solid performer since I got it new in 1985. There are a few parts remaining from the original machine. Follow the instructions. That grease must be added to the level where manually moving the machine shows grease pumping over the gears.
