CV740 27hp bogs severely under average load

I know you suction tested the fuel feed and changed the filter but twice now I've had insects cause my mower to bog down under load. In both cases I disconnected the fuel line after the filter and because fuel drained out I assumed it was all OK. In one case it would run for an hour and cut 1.5...

10 Year Old Raptor Bogging Down

I would clean out the fuel tank, the line to the filter and any fuel switch in that path. Twice I've had bugs get in and mess with the fuel flow. They were big enough to partially block the fuel flow at the exit from the tank and at the switch. Replacing the filter alone may not be enough...

    Wheels and tyre beads

Due to the very high cost of OEM wheels where I live I'm looking to make up some 4 stud hubs and buy wheels and rims for the front of my Toro ride on. The standard wheel is an 8" rim with 16" diameter 7.5" width tyres. Google says this width tyre ideally needs a 6.0" wide rim. I've been unable...

    Mower blades not turning

When you fitted a new clutch a year ago was the bolt tightened up to the correct torque? Did you follow the instructions on conditioning the clutch before use (typically engaging the clutch 5 times at low/mid engine rpm). The makers say they can wear out prematurely if you don't get this right...

How many hours do machines really last?

In my experience mowers rust and wear well before the engines give out. I've got perfectly good engines on mowers with welded up rusty decks and torn up grass collection bags. On ride on mowers I've gone through sets of front wheels as when the bearings fail and caused gradual damage to the...

    Craftsman Rider dies

Might be worth setting up a temporary tank and filter just to see if that cures the problem.

    Craftsman Rider dies

I had an issue with my B&S stopping after after 45 - 60 min running. That turned out to be the remains of insects that had got into the tank. Despite bouncing around over rough ground they would somehow settle out and restrict the outlet. They were bleached the same colour as the tank so v.hard...

Too much compression. adjusted the valves and it got worse

On my B&S engine the valve adjustment was quite critical to getting the decompression cam to work. It wasn't working at .008-0.010 but was fine at 0.004. Took me several goes to get them spot on because the locking seemed to effect the setting quite a bit. Have to recheck after locking. If...

    Briggs and Stratton, valve lash

    Another good vid..

    Briggs and Stratton, valve lash

That really sounds like the decompressor isn't working. I'd have the valve covers off again, recheck valve clearances and look for the little extra lift when turned over by hand.

    Briggs and Stratton, valve lash

With the valve cover off turn the engine over by hand. Check the intake valve (I think) for a slight movement just before TDC. If no movement then it looks like broken decompressor. Think it's needs a new camshaft to fix that. If you need to use the machine sometimes it will start if you...

    Briggs and Stratton, valve lash

My understanding is that the B&S has an extra little centrifugal widget that opens a valve at low rpm to decompress the engine to make starting easier. Apparently it only opens the valve a tiny bit, because if the valve gaps are slightly too big it doesn't open it at all and it becomes hard for...

Amazon carb for B&S engine, no threads, screw broke! It's a journey!!

+1 to cleaning out the fuel tank. I had a bizarre problem where the mower would run fine for an hour then start bogging down or stalling. Someone suggested I check the tank. I couldn't see anything in it and anyway my garden is bumpy so the fuel is being shaken up the whole time. I couldn't see...

    Too Much Compression?

I had same issue on a B&S. Definitely check the valve clearance is spot on. Apparently the decompressor only opens the valves a tiny bit so if the valve clearance is slightly out they don't open and the starter can't turn the motor over. Adjusting mine totally fixed the problem.

    Valve Clearance

Not sure about yours but my B&S has a cam that holds the exhaust valve open at low speeds (a decompressor). If the valve clearances are too big this doesn't work correctly and the engine can be hard to turn over. You get the impression its a faulty starter or battery. Adjusting the valve...

    B&S 440000 series V-Twin problem

I have a 440000 series B&S V-Twin in a Toro Wheelhorse that's giving me some trouble. From cold it starts fine and cuts quite tall grass ok. However after about 40-50mins or running it bogs down/looses power. If I'm quick and turn off the cutter and drive the revs will come back up. Sometimes...

    Toro PTO clutch adjustable?

Can anyone tell me if the PTO clutch on my Toro is adjustable? The Toro Part number of the clutch is 104-3334 and it's on a DH220 Model 74592 (European model). I've watched a few YouTube vids on various PTO clutches but most seem to have three slots into which a feeler gauge can be inserted...

Briggs & Stratton possible coil fault?

Humm... I've taken the diodes out for replacement and they aren't connected as I expected. I thought the kill wire was either open (run) or grounded (kill) and the diodes were to prevent the coils "talking" to each other. So I was expecting to find the cathodes of the diodes connected...

Briggs & Stratton possible coil fault?

I have a B&S V twin in a Toro ride on. Starts and run but occasionally after 30-60mins running it will sometimes loose power and will/would stall if I kept it loaded. Typically it recovers if left to stand for as little as 2-3 mins and might then be ok for another 30-60 mins. First time it...

    Toro Wheelhorse oil pressure

Is there an oil pressure sensor or alarm on the wheelhorse range? I have a DH220 (European ride on) and can't seem to find one mentioned anywhere. If not is there a service interval for the oil pump?

    Toro wheel part 110-9086

Had a wheel bearing failure on my Toro ride on mower and it's trashed the wheel. Having problems locating a replacement wheel here in England/Europe. List price appears to be equivalent to $200 for the wheel rim and bearings without tyre. Anyone know of a generic wheel that will fit? The Toro...
