    Mulching

Operational tip, when cutting/mulching, reduce the engine revs and the deck will clear better. You can buy a Tremble Hour Meter that will not require any power.

RPM for a 22" residential push mower

You are chasing the holy grail. Specification is one thing, regulation is another. Despite a machine having an optimum design efficiency, it must also comply with a whole raft of regulation, such as hand arm vibration, noise and emissions. In many cases, equipment leaves manufacturers set up...

    Run at Full Throttle?

On many new pieces of equipment the ' Certificate of Conformity' can dictate engine speed. irrespective of performance. If the equipment exceeds any of the following: Noise, Emissions, HAV (hand are vibration) or WBV (whole body vibration) the easiest solution is to reduce engine speed to a...

To heel or not to heel..

Setting the deck higher or lower at the front or back reduces the cutting arc at the lowest point.

    Run at Full Throttle?

We don't always run full throttle when mulching in damp conditions. As long as the cut is good, we run as slower engine speed as possible, we find the deck clears much better than flat out.

Briggs & Stratton 35 Classic engine, blue smoke + oil residue out of exhaust + Petrol in oil

The carb is mounted directly on the tank, (on the side of the engine) and is a diaphragm pump. No float valve, no place for a tap ! Sounds to me like the breather valve is not working properly, take it off and check.

    Brand loyalty?

Brand loyalty is only one small consideration when making a purchase, as has been clearly stated above, several other things need considered. 1) Will it do the job ? 2) What are the annual running/maintenance costs ? 3) Who will fix it when it breaks down ? 4) How quickly will it get fixed ? 5)...

Rebuilt engine hard to turn over, but then loosens up?

Most engines stop in exactly the same position no matter the revs they are stopped at. This is usually with the exhaust valve open, as many will know, as the valve can stick open if left for a long time. Maybe the tighter piston rings has changed that stop position, and the valves are closed...

    Compression issue after rebuild

Years ago, I stuck a s/h piston and rod in a similar engine, cranked was marked, I just rubbed it with some emery tape. Welded to hole up in the engine, and ran it on the basis it would run until it died forever. It ran for years defying all good practice advice. You are to far in to abandon...

    Compression issue after rebuild

This must be getting pretty frustrating. If everything ' mechanical ' is OK, as has been discussed, timing, valve clearance etc, then time to look elsewhere. You have a spark, so the only thing left is fuel. How clean in the fuel you are using ? Pour a little petrol into the inlet (not to...

    Compression issue after rebuild

    Compression issue after rebuild

If everything is assembled correctly, as they are keyed, it's simply a case of lining up the timing marks on the crank and cam shaft gears/teeth. There maybe a little 'blow back' into the carb when cranking, as there maybe a little lag, lead and overlap on the valves, to be honest, I don't...

    Compression issue after rebuild

So many issues here, it's difficult to know where to start. The engine cranked without the spark plug, then no good once the plug is fitted ? Is the spark plug the correct length and spec ? Is the battery good ? Backfiring into the exhaust and carb sounds like timing all day long, however it's...
