    B &S

140 inch lbs is not too much for 5/16 bolts. Current spec for some B&S engines call for 200 inch lbs for 5/16 grade 8 head bolts. I just checked the B&S Service Manual and it calls for 140 inch lbs for that series of engine. Have no idea what that is in metric. Walt Conner

    BRIGGS PARTS HELP!!!!

HP rating decals on mowers mean very little. Towards the end of the run of "L" head engines due to Government emissions restrictions, B&S was plastering all kinds of HP ratings on the left over engines. I have seen 46 series engines with 16.5 hp stickers on them, originally called 20 - 22 hp...

    BRIGGS PARTS HELP!!!!

You can not tell from the physical appearance of these engine whether it is a 40, 42 or a 46 series engine. While some parts will interchange between the three, not all will obviously since the hp varies considerably. I doubt it is a 40 series. Walt Conner

    BRIGGS PARTS HELP!!!!

Since that engine has a cast iron intake manifold, it will be too old to have a tag riveted to the top of the cooling shroud. The number would have been on the cooling shroud covering the side of the cylinder to the left of the picture when facing the intake manifold, #1 cylinder. Well, it...

Briggs &straton engine swap 16 hp oppose twin to 1 cylinder 15 hp briggs

I can't really tell you since you did not post the engine model number nor if it has a Walbro or a Nikki carb. IF it happens to be a Walbro - 691657, didn't list one for Nikki. Plug from practically any Walbro will work. OR you can just depress the plunger on the solenoid, jam a tooth pick...

    bad rings ?

"I took a Tecumseh push mower engine apart several years ago and it had a piston oil pump inside." And they had a screen over the intake which got gummed up and sealed off by neglect resulting in thrown rods. I always took the screen out when I had one apart. And crankcase seals is not your...

    wanted 18.5hp Briggs opposed twin

Where do you live? You obviously had the heads off, what did the cylinder walls look like? I know where there is probably one in Robinson, IL but I don't think widow would ship, I wouldn't either. Pistons and rings for that are the same as for 28 series "L" head singles. Walt Conner

    Help finding a Governor Gear

The governor gear is not something I have had to replace frequently, generally when the engine thru a rod. Repair or swap? Why not both?

The leaking sump gasket plauged all the V twin B&S engines and the cost of the upgrade "fix" kit for the sump probably is a good part of your gasket expense. I made my own gasket with equal quality gasket material from O'Reily Auto Parts, bought grade 8 bolts in the bulk from Rural King Farm...

Recoil kickback not flywheel key on 4hp Briggs

    Briggs Opposed Twin 20hp Surging

    carb spits fuel

intake lift rod not moving that much

A lot of these junk built up from segments camshafts had cam lobes which were not properly hardened. This was never a problem with the one pc. forged steel camshafts used for years by B&S. But they no doubt save a few cents with these plus they get a lot from selling replacements. Walt Conner

    Mower turns once then stops

Yes, of course this is a flat head horizontally opposed engine. It is possible that the new rings increased the compression enough that the starter could no longer turn the engine over.
