To test the primary circuit of your coil, one lead of multi meter to coil mount, one lead to primary connector, (ground connector wire unplugged) you should have continuity, Or ground as you call it.

It took 3 coils from Amazon to get the SRM 225 trimmer I was working on to run. Sent the 2 defective ones back….17 bucks for aftermarket versus 65 for Echo OEM coil. Guess what coils I will quote next job….?

Bert is correct, Parking brake does have a spring, hard to see but appears to be the same length but not painted. One end is not looped.

I just looked at my 2007 LA120 42” deck. No painted springs. Two springs for PTO, 1 on deck for belt tension and 1 on PTO lever (which is the correct length.) Plus one much longer spring for drive belt idler.

Have you run it for sometime to see if smoke goes away? Also a second oil change I find is necessary to clean up oil.
