Hmmmm..... looks like I found the culprit. I can't even to begin to imagine how this engine was running AT ALL!

Sorry it's been a while since I reported back.... but I haven't had much time to work on the "Bloody Briggs" until the last few days. Here's where we stand at the moment. GOOD NEWS!! The engine is assembled.... mounted to the mower. (The new lower seal... NOT leaking oil ... always my fear!)...

Well guys.... it's NOT the crank gear. Installed the new one.... still locking up. Looks like the next step is bertsmobile1's suggestion to check the counterweight system. Unfortunately, my engine has the AVS Balance System.... so that means the counterweight bolt is located on the flywheel...
